On something Australian

Vegemite. Marmite and Promite are not an option. Not even close.

Vegemite on toast.

On crumpets. I have a friend who fills uses Vegemite on his crumpets like gap filler - he fills the holes right up and levels it off. That's a little too hardcore for me, but I like the philosophy.

Cheese and Vegemite sandwiches. Bakery chain Baker's Delight make a "Cheeseymite" scroll and I noticed yesterday (bringing on this post) that they now make a wholemeal version of the same idea.

Or just plain sandwiches. On really fresh white bread, cut into quarters and no crusts.

If I don't have bread - which is often, I don't use enough to justify buying a loaf - I opt for the cheese sandwich. Two slices of cheese with vegemite spread between. Sadly, this works particularly well with processed cheese. Kraft even made (I don't recall if they still do) Vegemite Singles - slices of processed cheese with a Vegemite flavour. I avoided these, but embraced the concept.

I use Vegemite as a beef stock booster.

My sister had it in her bottle as a child - some parenting fad that faded out before I was born. I think it's funny, though, to be literally raised on Vegemite.

And of course on Vita-Wheats. These incredibly hard and pretty damn boring biscuits have only one saving factor - you can load up the butter and Vegemite in between two of these suckers and press them together just to make little Vegemite worms come out the holes. You're still left with two boring hard biscuits, but the process is fun.

Oh my god, this post has made me so homesick. Um, and hungry. I have Vegemite and Kraft singles - the two are synonymous in my mind - in my kitchen, but it's just not the same here. Dunno why.

Have you put Vegemite in gravy? It makes it oh so tasty.

I haven't tried the gravy thing. It makes sense, though.

So is there any other expat vices I can post about? TimTams? Do you remember Tasty TOOBs? They've made a comeback. What about Twisties?

I agree entirely that marmite and promite are not only bogus but also they taste like crap.
I have a friend who puts vegie in her spaghetti bolognaise, I haven't been game to try it yet but you never know I guess.
I heard that america has banned vegemite for some reason, it contains somthing they don't approve of.

P.S. the raspberry tim tams are to die for. And just might kill me at the rate I'm consuming them.
Too yummy.

Ah, Colonial Cuisine.
I have to admit I love Vegemite. Spread good and deep on inch-thick toast. God, that's really got me drooling!

Kate: In spag bol? There's something I never would have contemplated. But I'm intrigued! Next time I do a batch up I'll try to remember to do it.

I heard that also about America banning Vegemite. Maybe because it isn't sickly sweet and also can be good for you...

I saw the new TimTams the other day - I was drawn to the Vanilla more but I haven't actually tried any yet. I'm a die hard original style follower, though I had a brief affair with the Tia Maria variety... I wouldn't be worried about your consumption rate, though. The buggers won't leave them on the market long enough for it to become a serious habit!

Dive: How on earth did you come across vegemite? But you're right - I forgot to mention toast.

You are sweet to offer to post about other stuff, Vic. I can pretty much get most things here, including Tim Tams, and friends head back home to Melbourne twice a year and bring back little extras like Freddo Frogs. I don't remember Tasty Toobs though. What are they?

And Dive, what's with all your talk of colonies? What century/millennium are you living in mate?

Oh, and I forgot to put this in my last comment. I posted a while back about the Vegemite ban in the US, then a friend sent me the Snopes link about it saying it wasn't true.

Tasty Toobs. They disappeared for many years, but they're like a cross between Cheezels and Burger Rings in consistency and they have a tase similar to those pork rind things.

That description just does not do them the justice they deserve.

And GG, I wouldn't call the offer to post sweet... it's actually shameless teasing, but it won't work if those things are freely available to you!

Oh, and thanks for the link.

They sell Vege over here beside the Marmite, Vic.
I like 'em both, though I've never tried 'em together … Hmm … Toasty VegeMarmite cocktail ideas are swimming past my taste buds.

Dive - absolutely unequivically not!!! Marmite is a fraud. Ban the stuff.

Vic you were right about the tim tams, they didn't stay around long once everyone realised what I was eating.
Toobs - ahhhhhhh. I have about ten packets stashed in case they take them away again. Apparently because of the texture they were causing damage to the rooves (?) of peoples mouths thats why they banned them.

Awww! Kaaaate!
But Marmite is made with the leftover goo from the Adnams brewery in Southwold, my local beer and the nectar on which I was suckled.
I have to stay loyal to it I'm afraid.

Vic said...

Kate: damage the rooves of mouths? I get more pain after Burger Rings than from Toobs! But your idea of the stash is good thing! And I agree with you about the Marmite.

Dive: Both???? You're a first. Everyone else I've talked to is one or the other, no compromises. Dare you to do a spoonful of both together!

Describe this vegemite...

Vic said...

Oh, Cap'n! It be quite th'salty devil's concoction. It's dark, so dark as t'be almost black as th'night, an' thicker than grease. When th'stuff is cold it almost needs carvin' and it'll need coaxin' t'spread on th'toast. I've often come through a battle wi' th'toast torn t'shreds from when th'vegemite were too cold.

Th'stuff also hodls a shitewagonload of vitamin B, makin' it an essential fer th'quietin' o' th'evil hangover beasties.

groover, that be the most evocative description of vegemite my eyes have ever had the joy to behold.
that was sweet sweet poetry.

Well, i got here searching for Vegemite Kraft Singles. Since you were at the top of the list, I take it that Kraft don't make anymore...

And Arnott's will leave Tim Tam bikkies on the market in line with demand... that's what they did the black forest and creamy truffle etc. So keep buying up I guess.

I can't any products where I am - in Ukraine - I found a can of baked beans the other day and almost wet my pants.

Welcome, Little Miss Moi! No fear on the buying TimTams issue...

What on earth made you search for Vegemite Singles?
